The Prevention Shift: Redefining Sustainable Dentistry

By Brittany Cox, MA, RDH

Course Description:

We’re in the middle of a global shift toward prevention. Across medicine, nutrition, and mental health, people are demanding care that prevents illness, rather than just manages symptoms. This same shift is long overdue in dentistry. A preventive shift in dentistry means moving beyond reactive treatment and toward proactive, patient-centered protocols. This means we aren’t just catching problems early, but rather understanding root causes, guiding behavior change, and designing care plans that support health long-term.

Objectives:
  • Identify key risk factors and early signs of periodontal disease and caries, and apply evidence-based assessment protocols to create proactive treatment plans.
  • Demonstrate the use of motivational interviewing techniques to uncover patient barriers and support sustainable behavior change in daily oral hygiene and lifestyle habits.
  • Evaluate the role of nutrition, systemic inflammation, and lifestyle in oral health, and recommend realistic, prevention-driven strategies in a clinical setting.
  • Compare conventional vs. adjunctive tools and therapies for biofilm control, and select appropriate interventions based on individual patient needs.
